Rauw Alejandro

In 2017, Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it was the top-streamed track during the course of six months. The track is a mixture of pop music and reggaeton did not only bring attention to reggaeton but it was also an attraction towards Latin music more generally. In 2015 there were two predominantly Spanish-language songs in the Billboard Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. In the height of Despacito's commercial success in 2017, 19 songs that were mainly written in Spanish made it to the top 100. It climbed to 41 by 2020. After Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, well-known musicians began to join forces with reggaeton artists. Drake and Bad Bunny collaborated to record MIA (2018), while Madonna and Maluma collaborated on Medellin in the year 2019. The year 2000 saw a number of reggaeton artists were expressing displeasure at that the genre was moving towards mainstream, but a new generation such as Rauw Alejandro, sought to ensure that reggaeton was evolving. It often blended elements from electronic dance music and other forms.
